INTERVIEW // TIM HUGHES

Here is another addition to the interview series with my friend, Tim Hughes.

Please can you tell us about yourself and what do you do?
I live in London with my wife, Rachel and two children, Phoebe and Simeon. I’m the Director of Worship at Holy Trinity Brompton and also head up a school of worship called Worship Central.

How and when did you become a Christian?
My dad is a pastor so I have grown up in the church. I have never known life without God but there have been different stages where I have made deeper commitments; one being at the age of eleven at New Wine where I decided that I wanted to follow Christ for the rest of my life.

What song personally means the most to you and why?
Here I Am to Worship in many ways has been such a key song in my life in terms seeing it open up doors but also bringing with it an incredible lesson of God’s extravagant love and grace.

Who inspires you?
My wife and kids, my parents, Nicky Gumbel and Mike Pilavachi

What books would you recommend as ‘must reads’?
Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster, God on Mute by Pete Greig and Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela

What are the most important things you think every worship leader should know?
My favourite definition of worship is this: “Leading worship is taking your private cry and making it public.” It’s all about the hidden place, it’s about our relationship with God and effectiveness in leading worship comes with that.
