SOUNDTRACK OF HEAVEN

Revelation is a book that if I’m honest, completely melts my little brain! I have however, been really struck by a simple and striking model that heaven displays to us regarding corporate times of sung worship.

In Rev 4:8, we discover that heaven is singing a simple refrain over and over.

‘Each of the four living creatures had six wings, and their bodies were covered with eyes. Day and night they never stopped singing,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, the all-powerful God, who was and is and is coming!” ‘

In Rev 5:9 and 14.3 we see two new songs introduced to heavens worship,

‘And they sang a new song:
“You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation’

And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders.” ‘

Finally, in Rev 15:2-4 heaven sings old songs too – in this case the song of Moses.

…” ‘They held harps given them by God 3and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb:
‘Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages. 4Who will not fear you, O Lord, and bring glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.’ “

I believe we need to see a rich tapestry of songs within our corporate worship. We need those songs that have stood the test of time, that speak of incredible truth, faith, theology and transcendence. We need new songs that capture new ways of expressing age old truths, that bring a freshness and that tell of what God is doing now and we need those simple refrains that we can soak in.

What a privilege we have in joining in with the continuous and diverse soundtrack of heaven.
