INTERVIEW – AL GORDON

Here is my third interview with my friend Al Gordon.

Please can you tell us about yourself and what do you do?
My name is Al Gordon and I’m married to Olivia and we have a little boy called Kester. I’m on the staff of Holy Trinity Brompton in London and I help lead a school of worship called Worship Central.

How and when did you become a Christian?
I became a Christian when I was 18 years old, by listening to a worship tape in my room! I had a powerful encounter with Jesus and nothing has been the same since.

What song personally means the most to you and why?
“I will offer up my life” by Matt Redman was the song I first used as a prayer to give my life to Jesus. It was an incredibly powerful and significant song in my journey.

What books would you recommend as ‘must reads’?
“What’s so amazing about Grace” by  Philip Yancey and “Whatever happened to Worship” by A. W. Tozer.

What are the most important things you think every worship leader should know?
The worship leader is like an usher at the wedding, our job is to lead the bride to the bridegroom and then get out the way at the right moment. Our heart must be that of John the Baptist who knew when to decrease at the right time so that Jesus’ kingdom could increase.

Any other words of wisdom?
God is looking for servants, not stars today. Those who serve the church are called to a humility culture, not a celebrity culture, so we must do everything we can to walk humbly and to keep our hearts pure.

I love that description of those that lead worship being like ushers at a wedding… never thought of it that way before, but it’s so totally right.

    • Yeah same, it’s such a good analogy.

Is it not traditionally the father of the bride who leads the bride to the bridegroom? and if so does that not make the worship leader the father of the church? I think this is a slightly unhelpful anology. Sorry. I did like it before I thought about it.
